Germany and U. S. will send military equipment to Ukraine

Budrigannews.com – After France’s similar move earlier this week, the leaders of the United States and Germany announced on Thursday that they would be sending armored fighting vehicles to Ukraine in an effort to repel Russian forces.

Following a phone call between President Joe Biden and Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the United States and Germany announced in a joint statement that they would supply Marder Infantry Fighting Vehicles to Ukraine and Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles to Ukraine.

It said that Germany would also provide Ukraine with a Patriot air defense battery. Ukraine has had some successes on the battlefield since Russian forces invaded it in February, but it has asked allies for heavier weapons to defend itself. Both countries agreed to train Ukrainian soldiers on how to use them.

According to the statement, “President Biden and Chancellor Scholz expressed their common determination to continue to provide Ukraine with the necessary financial, humanitarian, military, and diplomatic support for as long as necessary.”

After France’s announcement that it would be sending light AMX-10 RC armored combat vehicles, Scholz’s government faced a chorus of calls from within his three-way coalition to increase military support for Ukraine.

Since the invasion, Scholz has increased defense spending and sent weapons and aid to Ukraine. However, like other Western powers, he has occasionally resisted providing powerful weapons for fear of engaging in direct conflict with Russia.

He has also made it clear that he would work with other NATO members to coordinate deliveries and that he did not want to send heavy weapons to Ukraine alone.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock made these remarks while she was in London. She said that Ukraine needs weapons not only to defend itself but also to free areas that are under Russian occupation.

Together with her British counterpart James Cleverly, she stated at a briefing, “We cannot leave any room to doubt our support, and we have to constantly see what more we can do, especially in terms of military support.”

“Ukraine needs to free occupied areas and the people who are suffering under Russian terror,” she stated, referring to the weapons included in that.

Additionally, politicians in Germany had renewed their calls for Berlin to send tanks to Ukraine.

After the French announcement, Scholz was publicly criticized by Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, head of the parliamentary defense committee and member of Scholz’s junior coalition partner, the Free Democrats (FDP), who stated that “other partner countries are once again leading the way.”
