George Santos lied and should resign-Republicans
By Ray Johnson
Budrigannews.com – A group of senior Republicans from his suburban New York district said on Wednesday that embattled U.S. Representative George Santos should resign from Congress because he told “lie after lie after lie” about his career and history.
The newly elected congressman told reporters at the Capitol that he would remain in office before the group of more than a dozen prominent Republicans from his home district in Nassau County were finished urging Santos to resign.
Two days after a nonpartisan watchdog filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission alleging that Santos had violated campaign finance laws, the Republicans made their plea at a news conference.
“It’s just more and more lies. “It became a pattern,” said party chairman Joseph Cairo Jr. in Nassau County, an eastern suburb of New York City.
Additionally, those urging Santos to resign included Republican Representative Anthony D’Esposito, who represents a district adjacent to Santos’s.
He stated, “I join with you and my colleagues in saying that George Santos does not have the ability to serve here in the House of Representatives and should resign.”
Despite Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy telling reporters on Wednesday that Santos would not be given a seat on any important committees, top Republicans in the House of Representatives, who have a narrow majority of 222-212, have not called for Santos to resign.
Santos, who represents a large portion of Nassau County and a small portion of New York City, has acknowledged fabricating a significant portion of his resume.
By 7.5 percentage points, he defeated Democrat Robert Zimmerman in the November election.
However, media reports indicating that the persona he presented to voters was largely fiction quickly overshadowed his victory.
Santos claimed, among other things, that he had degrees from Baruch College and New York University, despite the fact that neither school has any record of him attending there. He asserted that he was employed by Goldman Sachs (NYSE:) as well as Citigroup (NYSE:), which, too, was false.
Additionally, he made false claims regarding his Jewish heritage and the fact that his grandparents escaped the Nazis during World War II.
“It is beyond reproach for him to fabricate the claim that his parents survived the Holocaust. According to Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, “it is simply tragic, outrageous, and disgusting.” He makes the House of Representatives look bad.
Representative D’Esposito, who had agreed to assist Santos’ district residents, was referred to by officials at the news conference in some instances.
This week, the issue was referred to the House ethics committee by two Democrats on Tuesday. Santos is the subject of an investigation, according to the local district attorney’s office.
A competitive special election could take place in Santos’s district in the event of his resignation.
With 52% of the vote to Democrat Zimmerman’s 45%, the beleaguered representative won his 2022 election, giving Republicans the seat that was previously held by Democrat Thomas Suozzi.
The boundaries of the districts were redrawn for the 2022 election. In the 2020 presidential election, Democratic candidate Joe Biden would have won the district by eight percentage points if those lines had been in place.
The seat would remain vacant until a special election, which would take roughly three months, is held in accordance with federal and New York law.
