G7 to investigate war crimes in Ukraine
Budrigannews.com – As part of a push to prosecute alleged atrocities in Ukraine, the Group of Seven wealthy democracies (G7) agreed on Tuesday to establish a network to coordinate investigations into war crimes.
“The atrocities committed in Ukraine will require years, if not decades, of judicial investigation. However, “we will persist for as long as it takes,” German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann stated in a statement. “But we will be well prepared.”
It came after a meeting of G7 justice ministers in Berlin, which also included international criminal court special prosecutors, the federal prosecutor of Germany, and Denys Maliuska, the Ukrainian justice minister.
In a joint statement, the clergymen said G7 nations would guarantee there is a focal public contact point in each state for the indictment of global wrongdoings.
According to Buschmann, this would make it possible for states and international organizations to share information regarding evidence and legal requirements.
He went on to say that victims of sexual assault should have their statements recorded in a way that makes them admissible in court, so that victims only have to give one statement.
Buschmann praised Germany’s leading role in the prosecution of war crimes in other nations, calling Tuesday’s meeting the first of its kind in G7 history.
In a landmark trial against state-sponsored torture in Syria, Germany found two former Syrian intelligence officers guilty in accordance with the universal jurisdiction principle.
