Former Tennis world champion Martina Navratilova announced cancer
Budrigannews.com – Martina Navratilova, the former tennis world number one, disclosed on Monday that she has been diagnosed with throat and breast cancer.
With 59 Grand Slam singles and doubles titles, the Czech–American is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time.
The 66-year-old said in a statement to WTA, “This double whammy is serious but still fixable.”
“I’m expecting a great result. It will be unpleasant for some time, but I will fight with all my might.”
Navratilova, who was born in the Czech Republic and became a U.S. citizen in 1981, was also diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and beat it.
In addition, Navratilova stated that the cancer was in Stage 1 and that the prognosis was favorable, with treatment beginning next week.
During the WTA finals in the beginning of November, Navratilova noticed a swelling in her neck that did not go down. This was the first sign that she had cancer.
Mary Greenham, Navratilova’s agent, stated, “Martina noticed an enlarged lymph node in her neck during the WTA finals in Forth Worth.” After that, a biopsy was done, and the results showed that it was Stage 1 throat cancer.
“A suspicious form was found in Martina’s breast at the same time she was getting tested for throat cancer. It was later found to be cancer and had nothing to do with the throat cancer.
“The outcomes for both of these cancers are excellent in their early stages.”
Greenham stated that Navratilova, who is currently employed as a tennis presenter on television and radio, will not travel to Melbourne for the Australian Open, which will be held from January 16 to 29, but that she hopes to contribute to the broadcasts from a distance.
Greenham stated, “Martina won’t be covering the Open for the Tennis Channel from their studio, but hopes to join in occasionally by Zoom.” Martina will not cover the Open.
