Budrigannews.com – The government reported that a fire that broke out in a skyscraper late on Thursday night caused about 170 people to be evacuated from a shopping area in Hong Kong.
The flames could be seen from the other side of Victoria Harbour as firefighters battled the blaze at a redevelopment project in the Tsim Sha Tsui district in the early hours of Friday.
Witnesses to the incident told Reuters that the building’s upper floors were completely consumed by fire, and smaller fires were started in adjacent structures by flaming falling debris such as bamboo scaffolding.
The deputy chief fire officer of Hong Kong, Keung Sai-ming, told reporters that 250 firefighters and rescue workers battled the fire all night before it was put out around 8 a.m. (0000 GMT) local time.
He stated that an investigation was underway into the fire’s cause.
According to the Empire Group’s website, the building is a 42-story project that will house a hotel and the city’s Mariners Club.
The Mariners Club opened in 1967 to provide seafarers with affordable lodging. It was well-liked by maritime workers traveling through Hong Kong.
