Family Demands Charges against Officer Who Killed Child

Budrigannews.com – On Thursday, a family in Mississippi demanded that a police officer be fired and charged with aggravated assault for shooting an 11-year-old boy while responding to a domestic disturbance call at the child’s home.
According to family attorney Carlos Moore, Aderrien Murry, who called police at his mother’s request, was unarmed and following instructions from Indianola officer Greg Capers when Capers shot him in the chest early Saturday morning.
Moore said that Capers “escalated the situation” after the boy called police to the house when his mother, Nakala Murry, was threatened by a man at 4 a.m. local time.
Using Murry as a source, ABC News stated that the man was his father.
Moore objected to Capers being placed on paid leave while the investigation was ongoing and demanded that the bodycam video be made public. On Thursday morning, a small group of protesters joined the family for a sit-in protest at city hall.
“We’re asking for justice. Moore stated, “An 11-year-old Black boy in the city of Indianola came within an inch of dying.” He had done everything right and nothing wrong.”
According to CNN, Murry underwent treatment at the University of Mississippi Medical Center before being discharged on Wednesday.
There was no response from the police department.
The Mississippi Department of Examination is exploring, CNN detailed.
The episode is the most recent in a line of police shootings of unarmed African Americans. A 52-year-old man was killed in New Mexico in April when officers responded to a domestic violence call at the wrong house. In 2020, Breonna Taylor was killed in 2020 during a messed up police strike in Louisville, Kentucky.
Indianola, a 15,000-person majority Black community, is located approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of Jackson, the state capital.
