Budrigannews.com – The ministry of information reported that on Sunday, Islamist fighters detonated a bomb and then stormed a government building in the capital of Somalia, killing at least five civilians.
According to the ministry and witnesses, attackers from the al Shabaab group entered the building housing the mayor’s office around noon and got into a fight with security forces.
The ministry stated on its Facebook page (NASDAQ:) that security had eliminated six of the militants and cleared the area by approximately 6 p.m. page.
Since President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government launched an offensive against the al Qaeda-linked group in August, Al Shabaab has increased its attacks in a show of resilience.
“A blast decimated us while we were in the office. We escaped. “The mayor’s office worker Farah Abdullahi told Reuters that there was subsequent gunfire.”
The director of Aamin Ambulance Services, Abdikadir Abdirahman, provided a more accurate count and stated that the company had transported the bodies of eight civilian victims.
He went on to say that the attack injured at least 16 more people.
In a secure area of Mogadishu, the local government headquarters house the mayor’s office.
Numerous roadblocks and concrete barriers line the region’s roads. The president’s office, Villa Somalia, is about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) away from the building.
“then foot fighters entered the building after killing the building guards,” Al Shabaab claimed in a statement.
Since 2006, the movement has been fighting the government and trying to impose its own interpretation of Islamic law. It frequently attacks the country with guns and bombs.
State television for Jubbaland, one of the country’s semi-autonomous states, reported on Sunday that regional and Somalia federal forces had launched attacks on al Shabaab and taken control of the town of Janay Abdale from the militants, indicating that the government was expanding its offensive against the group into the country’s south.
