EU may impose new sanctions against Iran over executions

Budrigannews.com – On Monday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz criticized Iran for using the death penalty against protesters. According to a spokesperson for Scholz, Berlin wanted to increase international pressure on the Iranian government.
During nationwide protests that followed the death of 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Amini on Sept. 16, Iran hanged two men for allegedly killing a member of the security forces. The protests were condemned by the European Union, the United States, and other Western nations.
Scholz wrote on Twitter, “With the executions, the Iranian regime is employing the death penalty as a means of repression.” That is appalling.
After the deaths of 22-year-old Mohammad Mehdi Karami and 39-year-old Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini, he said that Iran should not carry out any more executions. This brings the total number of executions linked to the protests to four.
A government spokesperson said at a regular news conference, “Together with our international partners, we will increase the pressure further on the Iranian regime,” adding that Iran needed to understand there would be consequences for continuing.

A spokesperson for the German foreign ministry stated that the objective was to agree on a fourth set of sanctions with other member states of the European Union as a response to the crackdown.
