Eskom CEO poisoning case
Budrigannews.com – On Sunday, Eskom, the power utility in South Africa, said that the police were looking into whether an attempt was made to poison its outgoing CEO, Andre de Ruyter.
De Ruyter resigned on December 14 after failing to resolve a company crisis that has resulted in record levels of power outages in Africa’s most industrialized economy, despite political pressure.
De Ruyter led a company-wide crackdown on organized crime and corruption at Eskom plants, including sabotage of infrastructure, after officially taking office in January 2020. The 31st of March will be his last day in office.
The utility’s head of security stated in a statement, “Eskom cannot comment further on the poisoning incident involving the group chief executive, which occurred during December 2022, as the matter is subject to police investigation.”
Reuters contacted the South African police for comment, but they did not immediately respond. Mpho Makwana, Eskom’s chairman of the board, was also unavailable.
The energy-focused publication EE Business Intelligence first reported the alleged poisoning of De Ruyter on Saturday.
