EQ from Mercedes will not
Budrigannews.com – According to company sources, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Thursday that Mercedes-Benz is planning to discontinue the EQ brand for battery-electric vehicles as soon as the next generation of compact cars, which are scheduled to go on sale at the end of 2024, are released.
According to sources cited by Handelsblatt, the decision is based on Chief Executive Ola Kaellenius’s focus on electric-only vehicles, rendering the EQ brand obsolete as Mercedes moves away from the combustion engine.
The first all-electric model series from the German automaker was announced in 2016 and is now sold under the EQ brand. The first model, the EQC electric SUV, will be released in 2019.
According to a spokesperson for Mercedes’ EQ products, the brand is a crucial component of the automobile manufacturer’s electromobility strategy.
“We will adapt the positioning of the vehicles and thus also the use of the brand in line with the times, with the goal of our parent brand Mercedes-Benz becoming fully electric by the end of the decade,” the spokesperson stated. “It is too early for details on this at the moment.”
