Entry with weapons into capital of Brazil prohibited during inauguration of president
Budrigannews.com – In response to recent instances of political violence, the Supreme Court of Brazil on Wednesday prohibited registered gun owners from carrying firearms in the federal district until after the inauguration of President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
In the region surrounding the capital city of Brasilia, Justice Alexandre de Moraes temporarily revoked permits for hunters, marksmen, and collectors to carry guns, firearms, and ammunition.
Moraes’ decision, which was reviewed by Reuters, states that the measure will be in place from Wednesday evening until January 2, the day after Lula’s inauguration.
After the most contentious election in a generation, in which leftist Lula narrowly defeated far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, the move comes as tensions remain high in the South American nation.
Supporters of Bolsonaro have been gathering outside of army barracks to call for a coup. One of the most extreme camps is now located outside the army headquarters in Brasilia.
Some of the people who lived in the camp attacked the Brasilia federal police headquarters on December 12, the day that Lula was declared victorious. A man who claimed that Bolsonaro’s call to arms inspired him to build up an arsenal was arrested on Saturday for attempting to set off a bomb in protest of the election results.
Since Bolsonaro began easing gun regulations in 2019, the number of registered gun owners in Brazil has increased by sixfold to approximately 700,000.

Moraes said in his choice that anybody discovered breaking the boycott ought to be captured. Private security firm employees and members of the security forces are exempt from the prohibition.
Flavio Dino, the new Justice Minister, praised the decision and stated that it would increase the level of security at the inauguration. He stated that Lula’s team had requested that firearm licenses be revoked by the Supreme Court.
