Budrigannews.com – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released a statement stating that three river barges were pinned against the lower McAlpine Dam site on Tuesday when several river barges broke loose from a tow boat on the Ohio River in Louisville, Kentucky.
According to the Army Corps, the “navigation accident, which occurred approximately at 2 a.m. EDT” on Tuesday caused the lock chambers at the McAlpine Locks and Dam, which are located on the Ohio River at mile 606.7, to be closed to river traffic.
The statement reads: “All other barges were recovered by other vessels in the local area. Three barges are pinned against the lower dam site, one barge is pinned against the Louisville and Indiana bridge pier.”
The Army Corps said that there were no injuries and that everyone was found. It also said that it is working on the recovery effort with the U.S. Coast Guard, the navigation industry, and marine surveyors.
According to the Army Corps, the locks will remain closed until the dam’s barges are stabilized.
The U.S. Army Corps and the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet could not immediately be reached for comment.
