Egypt will help Greece with labor
Budrigannews.com – A pilot program that was agreed upon by the two nations on Tuesday will see Egypt provide 5,000 seasonal workers to assist Greece in meeting the expanding requirements of its agricultural sector.
The deal could serve as a “guide” for future agreements Greece and the EU make with third countries to combat illegal immigration, according to a statement from Greece’s foreign ministry.
After signing the agreement with his Egyptian counterpart Ihab Nasr, Deputy Foreign Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis stated, “We hope that the first Egyptian workers will be in the Greek fields to help harvest the next crop early next year.”
The Egyptian farm workers will be able to enter Greece and remain there for up to nine months before going back home.
In 2020, Greece and Egypt agreed to create an exclusive economic zone in the eastern Mediterranean with potential oil and gas reserves.
They have also been looking into building the first such infrastructure in the Mediterranean: an undersea cable that will transport renewable energy power from North Africa to Europe.
