Budrigannews.com – On Monday, a massive shooting that took place at two locations in the coastal city of Half Moon Bay in northern California resulted in the deaths of seven people. Authorities stated that the suspect was apprehended after driving to a police parking lot and apparently attempting to surrender.
Following the 11-person mass shooting that occurred on Saturday in the southern California city of Monterey Park, the shooting in Half Moon Bay, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of San Francisco, occurred.
According to California Governor Gavin Newsom, he was visiting the hospitalized victims of the Monterey Park shooting when he was summoned and informed of the shooting in Half Moon Bay, which is approximately 380 miles (610 kilometers) to the north.
Twitter post by Newsom read, “Tragedy upon tragedy.”
Farm worker advocates said that a series of heavy rainstorms recently battered the rural area, causing extensive damage and affecting immigrant laborers there. Twenty people across the state were killed in a series of atmospheric rivers during the three weeks following Christmas.
Christina Corpus, the sheriff of San Mateo County, said that the suspect, Chunli Zhao, 67, worked at one of the shooting locations. Corpus called the nurseries at the sites, and other officials said that farm workers worked there. At least one of them was referred to in the local media as a mushroom farm.
“This evening, farm workers were affected. At the time of the incidents, there were children present. San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller told reporters that “this is a truly heartbreaking tragedy in our community.” This community has been under a lot of stress for the past few weeks.
Corpus stated that although the suspect was assisting investigators, no motive had been established.
She stated that his car contained a handgun that was semi-automatic.
Corpus stated at a news conference that deputies responding to a call discovered four bodies and a fifth victim with life-threatening wounds at the first location in Half Moon Bay. They then discovered three more bodies at another location nearby.
The arrest was captured on video that was broadcast on ABC 7 from the Bay Area, with the man being led out of his vehicle by two plainclothes men and one uniformed deputy with guns drawn. After the suspect emerged, they searched for weapons and threw him to the ground. Long-gun-wielding officers in uniform rushed to the scene.
According to Corpus, investigators believe the suspect drove to the station to surrender. According to Corpus, when a deputy spotted the car in the parking lot, the description of the vehicle as well as the license plate were already being passed around by law enforcement.
A witness to the arrest told reporters that she had visited the sheriff’s department in search of additional information because she was concerned about the welfare of farm workers and was involved in agriculture.
Kati McHugh told reporters at the scene, “I came down here to find out what I could about the situation and why this happened, and I hadn’t expected to get quite that close to it.” I couldn’t stand how close it was.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were 38 mass shootings in the United States in the first 21 days of the year. A mass shooting is one in which four or more people, including the shooter, are killed or wounded.
