Croatia has joined the Schengen area
Budrigannews.com – Croatia rang in two notable changes with the new year, as the European Association’s most youthful part joined both the EU’s sans line Schengen zone and the euro normal money, satisfying longstanding desires of close coordination with Europe.
At midnight, police took down signs at the Bregana border crossing with Slovenia and removed a barrier before installing a placard with the words “free passage” to signify the end of border checks.
At a ceremony later on Sunday at the border, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said, “If there are historical moments, special moments that should provide us with great honor and when we witness the achievement of strategic goals of a state — this is such a day.”
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, was there with him, and she called it “a day to celebrate.”
“Croatia is now a member of both the Eurozone and the Schengen Area, two significant milestones that the youngest member state of the European Union achieved on the same day. As a result, this day will go down in history.”
After that, Plenkovic and von der Leyen went on a tour of the capital, Zagreb. While there, they used euros, which had replaced Croatia’s kuna, to buy coffee in a cafe. Plenkovic paid with a few euro notes as a server brought their coffees to an outdoor table, and von der Leyen, who was seated next to him, applauded.
In 2013, Croatia joined the EU. It joins the Schengen area as the 27th nation and adopts the euro as the 20th.
Last month, Croatia’s Finance Minister Marko Primorac spoke to lawmakers about the advantages of using the euro, claiming that it would strengthen the economy, boost investment, and make Croatia more resistant to shocks from outside.
