Budrigannews.com – The Department of Justice announced on Friday that a defendant charged in connection with the riots that occurred on January 6 at the U.S. Capitol has been indicted on charges of conspiring with a second man to kill the FBI agents who were investigating him.
In a criminal complaint, both Edward Kelley, 33, the Jan. 6 defendant, and Austin Carter, 26, are accused of conspiring, retaliating against a federal official, soliciting a violent crime, and making threats across state lines.
“The claims made today that people wanted to attack, hurt, or kill FBI employees are sickening. In a written statement, FBI Director Christopher Wray stated, “FBI employees honorably perform their duties of protecting the American public and upholding the Constitution, and they should be able to execute these duties without threats of violence.”
During their initial court appearance on Friday in U.S. District Court in Knoxville, Tennessee, both men were given orders to be detained.
“Mr. Carter maintains his innocence and we look forward to zealously defending him against these allegations,” an attorney for Carter, Josh Hedrick, told Reuters via email. Reuters did not receive a response from Kelley’s attorney on Friday evening.
Examiners say Kelley and Carter got a rundown of government specialists participating in the examination concerning Kelley and talked about plans to kill them with a coordinating observer. In the court documents, the cooperating witness was not named.
Additionally, it is alleged that the two men discussed a potential attack on the FBI’s Knoxville field office with a cooperating witness.
Kelley is one of hundreds of people who have been charged in connection with the violent protests that took place at the U.S. Capitol on January 6 as Congress met to confirm President Joe Biden’s victory over incumbent Donald Trump in the 2020 election.
