Colombian group announced pre-holiday truce
Budrigannews.com – The National Liberation Army (ELN), a leftist guerrilla group in Colombia, declared a nine-day unilateral ceasefire over the Christmas holiday on Monday in an effort to support peace talks with the Andean nation’s government.
In Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, the first round of peace talks between the two sides were concluded last week by the government of Colombia and the ELN.
The discussions hope to end the revolutionary gathering’s part in Colombia’s struggle under the surface, which has run for just about sixty years and left somewhere around 450,000 dead somewhere in the range of 1985 and 2018.
In a televised statement, a woman member of the ELN said, “The ELN remains committed to continue contributing to create a better environment of peace on these Christmas and New Year dates, therefore we decree a unilateral ceasefire from 6 a.m. (1100 GMT) on Dec. 24, 2022 until 6 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2023,” flanked by other guerrillas with rifles.
The ELN stated in a recorded statement that the unilateral ceasefire would only apply to Colombia’s military and police, and that it reserved the right to defend itself in the event of an attack.
The ELN some of the time conflicts with rival gatherings, for example, the Family del Golfo and protester individuals from the now-grounded FARC guerrillas, who reject a 2016 harmony manage the Colombian state.
Politicians and officials praised the declaration.
