Buffalo police search for victims after Thaw
Budrigannews.com – Following the deadly Christmas blizzard that dumped about 55 inches (140 cm) of snow on New York’s second-largest city, members of the police and the National Guard were going door to door on Wednesday to check on residents of some Buffalo neighborhoods.
There were 34 deaths in Buffalo and the surrounding Erie County and one in Niagara County as a result of the storm, which was driven by an arctic blast and brought freezing temperatures as far south as the Mexican border.
Mark Poloncarz, the chief executive of Erie County, stated that door-to-door wellness checks could uncover additional fatalities in areas where power was out for extended periods during the storm.
During a news conference on Wednesday, Poloncarz stated, “We are fearful that there are people who are not doing well, or who may have perished.”
By Wednesday morning, almost all of the electricity had been restored, and as Buffalo continued to dig itself out, the temperature was rising.
To transport tons of snow to four city and county lots, approximately 120 dump trucks carrying about 75 front-end loaders were working around the clock to shovel the snow. According to Poloncarz, the objective was to have at least one lane of traffic open on each street by Wednesday night.
The military and New York City police were called in to wave cars off the road and stop traffic trying to enter Buffalo, which remained under a driving ban.
Just a hint of snow could fall on Bison and Western New York off the Incomparable Lakes on Wednesday as temperatures will hit 40 degrees Fahrenheit, said Josh Weiss, a meteorologist with the Public Weather conditions Administration’s Climate Forecast Center in School Park, Maryland.
Fortunately, most of the snow has disappeared. “They require a break,” stated Weiss.
He stated, “In Buffalo, there is no forecast below zero into the following week.” It will be in the 50s by the weekend.”
According to Weiss, a warming trend has begun in the eastern third of the United States as well. This trend is expected to continue past the new year, when temperatures will largely remain above freezing.
Western New York is anticipating between 1/4 and 1/2 inch of rain on Friday and Saturday due to melting snow.

“We’re anticipating a quick dissolve, and territorial flooding on rivers. “Creek levels will peak,” Poloncarz of Erie County stated.
Some of the New York storm victims were found frozen in cars, others in snowbanks, and still others died of medical emergencies like cardiac arrest while shoveling snow.
