Buffalo murder suspect pleads guilty
Budrigannews.com – According to local media, an avowed white supremacist pleaded guilty on Monday to first-degree murder and other state charges in a mass shooting in Buffalo, New York, that killed ten people in May at a supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood.
Payton Gendron, 19, pleaded guilty to 25 counts related to the shooting that also wounded three people at an Erie County Court hearing. After receiving an indictment from a grand jury, he initially pleaded not guilty in June.
Ten counts of first-degree murder and ten counts of second-degree murder, all of which were hate crimes, were brought against Gendron, who was from Conklin, New York.
The stupendous jury prosecution, which incorporated a charge of homegrown illegal intimidation roused by disdain, blamed Gendron for completing the assault in view of the apparent race of his casualties.
He faces a life sentence without the possibility of parole. The death penalty does not exist in New York.
Authorities said Gendron, who was 18 at the time of the shooting, drove three hours to the Tops Friendly Markets store in Buffalo from his home near Binghamton, New York.He wanted to find a public spot in a neighborhood where many Black people lived.
He used an assault rifle that was semi-automatic and shot 13 people at the supermarket.Blacks made up eleven of the victims.
Before the attack, he allegedly posted a racist manifesto online and live-streamed the shooting on social media.
An earlier statement by Terrence Connors, an attorney for the relatives of seven of the deceased and two of the surviving victims, stated that Gendron had not entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors.
A sentencing hearing is anticipated in the future.
Gendron was charged with 27 federal hate crimes and firearms offenses in a separate indictment that was returned to U.S. District Court in July. If convicted, he could receive the death penalty.
