Budrigannews.com – According to a statement released by federal police, politician Roberto Jefferson fired at police while resisting an arrest order issued by the country’s Supreme Court on Sunday for insulting a justice.
According to the federal police, the former congressman threw a grenade, and shrapnel from it caused injuries to two officers. According to the statement, both were taken to the hospital and later released.
Gustavo Cunha, Jefferson’s attorney, claimed that he advised his client to surrender but that he declined.
The congressman showed a video of federal police officers approaching his house in a social media post. Later, he admitted in another video that he had aimed at the police car but not the officers.
After the former congressman and president of the PTB political party released a tape that criticized justice Carmem Lucia for decisions she made regarding the presidential elections, Jefferson, an ally of President Jair Bolsonaro, was ordered to be taken to jail by federal police.
Jefferson was already the subject of an investigation into alleged involvement in the production of fake news. On Friday, he made statements that upset justice Carmem Lucia. Lucia had decided to give some of Bolsonaro’s air time to former President and presidential candidate Luis Inacio Lula da Silva after the leftist complained about violations in the rival’s political ads.
Randolfe Rodrigues and Eliziane Gama, two senators from the opposition, had asked the Supreme Court to punish Jefferson for offending Lucia.
Tweeting that he “condemns the statements against minister Carmem Lucia and armed resistance against the federal police,” Bolsonaro attempted to distance himself from Jefferson.
According to Lula, the police should now resolve the problem.
