Brazil lacks strength to fight the climate-Silva
By Ray Johnson
Budrigannews.com – On Tuesday, Marina Silva, Brazil’s Environment Minister, stated that international investments have not resulted in contributions to her nation’s effort to reduce deforestation in the Amazon (NASDAQ:). and aid in the fight against global warming.
She stated that Brazil’s opposition to the EU trade deal with the Mercosur bloc in South America has regained the European Parliament’s trust.
Silva stated at the World Economic Forum (WEF) that Brazil’s “completely dismantled” environmental agencies and policies were being rebuilt by the new government, which took office on January 1.
Silva stated that President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had made an offer to hold the COP30 climate summit in the Amazon region in 2025 to demonstrate Brazil’s commitment to reducing the effects of climate change.
“Global regulation is effective, but investments are lacking, and the $100 billion that wealthy nations had committed is still not available. “At this time, we need resources for both mitigation measures and adaptation,” she stated.
She continued, “The responsibility of preserving the Amazon rainforest is not solely ours.”
Silva stated that Brazil requires technological assistance and partnerships.
The minister stated, “We can reduce deforestation in the Amazon to zero, but Amazonia will still be destroyed if the rest of the world continues to emit CO2.”
Later, Silva told reporters that the new government will “revisit” the free trade agreement with Mercosur because it has overcome European mistrust of Brazil’s management of the Amazon rainforest.
Lula has stated that he wants to renegotiate portions of the agreement that have been negotiated for 20 years in order to include guarantees regarding human rights and the environment.
She said that the Inter-American Development Bank, led by Brazil’s Ilan Goldfajn, wanted to finance sustainability projects and that the foundation of actor Leonardo DiCaprio wanted to raise $100 million and put it into the Amazon.
Brazil’s Economic, Social, and Environmental Roadmap was discussed in a panel by Silva and Finance Minister Fernando Haddad at the WEF.
