Brazil is looking for organizer of riots
Budrigannews.com – After thousands of supporters of the far-right former president Jair Bolsonaro ransacked government buildings late on Sunday, the Supreme Court of Brazil removed the governor of Brasilia from office for 90 days due to security issues in the capital.
Additionally, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes directed Facebook (NASDAQ:), Twitter and TikTok to prevent propaganda supporting a coup.
The worst attack on the country’s institutions since democracy was restored four decades ago has been under investigation by Brazilian authorities, and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has promised to bring those responsible to justice.
On Sunday, tens of thousands of anti-democratic demonstrators broke windows, overturned furniture, destroyed art, stole the country’s original 1988 Constitution, and invaded the Supreme Court, Congress, and presidential palace. Additionally, guns were taken from a presidential security office.
The local militarized police force that reports to Brasilia Governor Ibaneis Rocha, a former ally of Bolsonaro, did nothing to stop the protesters’ advance, according to leftist president Lula, who took office on January 1.
Lula ordered the federal government to intervene in the capital’s public safety and promised severe punishment to the leaders of the “fascist” attack, which was meant to provoke a military coup that could bring Bolsonaro back to power.
In an interview with reporters in Sao Paulo State, Lula stated, “All the people who did this will be found and punished.”
Allies of Lula questioned how public security forces in the capital were so unprepared and easily overwhelmed by rioters who had posted their plans on social media days before the attack.
After Lula’s rule ended, Bolsonaro was blamed for inflaming his supporters with baseless allegations of election fraud. Lula’s rule was marked by nationalist populism that caused division.
Bolsonaro tweeted that peaceful demonstrations were democratic, but the invasion of government buildings “crossed the line” from Florida, where he flew 48 hours before his term ended.
The invasion, which reminded people who support former President Donald Trump of their attack on the U.S. Capitol two years ago, was swiftly condemned by world leaders, including Latin American heads of state and President Emmanuel Macron of France.
After three hours, the police returned to the damaged public buildings in the iconic, futuristic capital and used tear gas to disperse the crowd.
While governor Rocha stated that 400 demonstrators had been detained, Justice Minister Flavio Dino stated that 200 had been detained.
Dino said that the investigations will look into Rocha’s failure to prepare security and find out who funded the hundreds of buses that brought Bolsonaro supporters to Brasilia.
Bolsonaro’s supporters had been gathering in groups on social media messaging platforms like Telegram and Twitter for at least two weeks to plan an occupation of the government buildings. However, security forces did nothing to stop the attack, which one group called “the seizure of power by the people.”
Throughout the course of the week, messages obtained by Reuters showed members of such groups setting up meeting places in a number of different cities across the nation, from which chartered buses would depart for Brasilia, with the intention of occupying public buildings.
The strategy called for setting up camp in front of the headquarters of the army command, where groups of conspirators had been camping since Lula narrowly won the election in October.
When the protesters began to arrive on Brasilia’s esplanade in the early afternoon of Sunday, they were escorted by cars with flashing lights belonging to the Military Police instead of being contained.
Two hours after the invasions began, riot police were not present.
Bolsonaro’s future in the United States, where he traveled on a visa only issued to sitting presidents, is in doubt, and he faces legal risks from several investigations before the Supreme Court in Brazil.
On CNN, Democratic Congressman Joaquin Castro stated, “Bolsonaro should not be in Florida.” This authoritarian, who has fostered domestic terrorism in Brazil, should not seek refuge in the United States. He ought to be returned to Brazil.”
