Budrigannews.com – An invitation to attend U.S. President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address in February has been extended to Tyre Nichols’ mother and stepfather, the Black man who was fatally beaten by Memphis police officers.
On Sunday, the executive director of the Congressional Black Caucus, Vincent Evans, tweeted that Nichols’ parents had been invited to Washington for the State of the Union address by the caucus chairman, U.S. Representative Steven Horsford, and that they had accepted the invitation.
Nichols cried repeatedly, “Mom! Mom!” after a traffic stop on Jan. 7, the five Memphis police officers charged with the murder of the Black motorist beat him up with kicks, punches, and baton blows, according to video released by the city on Friday.
The Black officers were fired from the police department. Three days after the confrontation in the city where he lived with his mother and stepfather and worked at FedEx (NYSE:), Nichols, 29, was taken to the hospital and passed away from his injuries. In the case, a sixth police officer was also fired.
Additionally, the Congressional Black Caucus stated that it was in discussions with the White House regarding arranging a meeting to discuss police reform.
The death of Nichols was the most recent high-profile instance in recent years of police officers being accused of using excessive force in the deaths of Black people and other minorities.
On Friday, Biden spoke with Rodney Wells, Nichols’ stepfather, and RowVaughn Wells, Nichols’ mother. The family’s attorney stated that Nichols’ mother hoped the tragedy would result in a “greater good.”
On February 7, Biden will give his second State of the Union address.
Biden is expected to use the speech, which is given in a joint session of Congress, as an unofficial start to his campaign for president in 2024. In it, he will lay out policy priorities that might have a hard time getting through Congress after Republicans won control of the House in the midterm elections.
