Avatar’s box office receipts exceeded 2 billion

Budrigannews.com – The expensive sequel film “Avatar: On Sunday, “The Way of Water” made more than $2 billion worldwide, establishing it as yet another hit Disney franchise (NYSE:). Co. Director James Cameron had stated that the film would not break even unless it made $2 billion. 13 years after the original “Avatar” introduced the lush world of Pandora, “The Way of Water” made its debut at the end of December (OTC:). and grew into a global phenomenon.
Disney estimates that “The Way of Water” made $2.024 billion at the box office on Sunday. It remains the sixth-highest-grossing film ever after six theater weekends. Outside of the United States and Canada, approximately $1.4 billion has been spent on tickets.
Senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore stated, “It’s an unqualified success.” The top franchises are those that have revenues in the billions.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that the film’s production and marketing costs totaled at least $350 million. Disney has not disclosed the movie’s budget. Theaters and studios share ticket sales.
Analysts said that the film’s strong reception should also help bring people to a Pandora area at Walt Disney World in Florida and boost merchandise sales for years to come.
Disney’s $71 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox assets in 2019 was touted as one of the jewels: “Avatar,” a property that Disney could elevate alongside Star Wars and Marvel. Nelson Peltz, an activist investor running for a position on the Disney board, has argued that the company paid too much for Fox.
Cameron has already begun filming a third “Avatar” movie, which will be released in December 2024. The dates for the fourth and fifth installments are December 2026 and December 2028, respectively.
The original “Avatar” captivated viewers with groundbreaking visuals that told the story of the Na’vi people of Pandora, who were blue and stood 9 feet tall. With $2.9 billion in worldwide ticket sales, the 2009 film is still the highest-grossing film ever.
Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri, now parents of five children, ten years later in “The Way of Water.” The family hides with an oceanic clan when humans return to pursue Jake.
The two “Avatar” films and the 1997 drama “Titanic” are two of Cameron’s top six productions.
