Apple was sued over AirTag
Budrigannews.com – Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:) has been sued by two women who claim that its AirTag devices have made it easier for stalkers and their former partners to locate victims.
The women claimed that Apple has been unable to protect people from unwanted trafficking through AirTag since launching what it called the “stalker proof” device in April 2021, in a proposed class action filed on Monday in San Francisco federal court.
AirTags, which have a diameter of 1-1/4 inches (3.2 cm) and start at $29, are designed to be slipped into or attached to keys, wallets, backpacks, and other items so that they can be located in the event that they become lost.
However, experts in privacy and the law have stated that some individuals use Airtags for criminal or malicious purposes.
According to the plaintiffs, AirTag is “the weapon of choice of stalkers and abusers” and has been linked to the murders of Akron, Ohio, and Indianapolis women this year.
Owners of iOS or Android-based devices in the United States who were tracked by AirTag or are “at risk” of being stalked as a result of Apple’s alleged negligence are the subject of Monday’s lawsuit, which seeks unspecified damages.
On Tuesday, inquiries for clarification were not met with an immediate response from Apple.
The Cupertino, California-based organization has recognized that “troublemakers” have had a go at abusing Airtags.
In February, Apple declared arranged moves up to make it more straightforward to track down the gadgets, and caution clients quicker that obscure AirTags may be “going with them.”
Lauren Hughes, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit that was filed on Monday, claimed that her former boyfriend placed an AirTag in the wheel well of her car and discovered where she had moved to avoid him.
Jane Doe, the other plaintiff, claims that her estranged husband tracked her after putting an AirTag in their child’s backpack. She claims that he later posted a photo online of a taco truck from her new neighborhood and included a winking emoji with the hashtag.
