Apple May Add Ads to Maps and Other Apps
Budrigannews.com – Apple (AAPL), in search of a new revenue driver, will expand ads to new areas of the iPhone and iPad.
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman said Apple could eventually place ads on more of the apps that are pre-installed on iPhones and other Apple devices. The apps include Maps, Books, and Podcasts.
Gurman stated the tech giant has already internally tested search ads in the Apple Maps app, which could allow ads for restaurant or store recommendations.
Apple already has a similar ad model on its App Store, with developers able to pay to advertise their app on a search page for a certain query. Gurman explained that ads on other apps such as Maps could use a similar function with businesses paying to advertise when users type in a particular search term.
Apps such as Maps, Books, and Podcasts are currently ad-free. In addition, Gurman said he believes Apple could expand ads to its Today tab and app download pages.
Other products such as Apple TV Plus could generate more advertising with multiple tiers, stated Gurman.
However, the Bloomberg report stated that they do not expect Apple to go back to placing ads inside third-party apps, adding “at least not soon,” after the company “tried and failed” at that with iAd in 2010.
Apple shares (NASDAQ:AAPL) are up 0.6% Monday.
