Apple enhances data protection
Budrigannews.com – (NASDAQ) Apple Inc. plans to require a physical security key when logging in from a new device and allow users to more tightly lock down photos and notes stored on its iCloud service, it announced on Wednesday.
The company stated that celebrities, journalists, activists, politicians, and other high-profile individuals who are frequently the targets of hackers are specifically targeted by the upcoming options and another security measure for Apple’s iMessage chat program.
The manufacturer of the iPhone stated that although it was unaware of any breaches to iCloud servers or iMessage exchanges, the number of attempted hacks is rising.
By the end of the year, users in the United States will be able to activate the free Advanced Data Protection for iCloud storage. If the feature is enabled, Apple cannot assist users in recovering lost password-protected data, including voice memos, notes, and approximately 20 other types of data. Next year, it will expand worldwide.
The option to require a security fob to be plugged into a new device in order to access an Apple account is expected to become available in the coming year. Alphabet, a rival (NASDAQ:) Google, part of Google Inc., already supports these $25 hardware keys, which are approved by the industry body FIDO.
Automatic alerts about unrecognized devices potentially spying on the exchange would be sent to users who enable the new Contact Key Verification feature in iMessage next year. Security codes can also be manually matched by users to confirm that their communication is secure. Similar features are provided by Signal and other secure chat services.
