Budrigannews.com – Russian state media reported that a woman from the United States was detained on Wednesday and assessed a fine by a Russian court for walking a calf she claimed she had purchased to prevent its slaughter on Moscow’s Red Square.
On a separate charge of disobeying police orders, 34-year-old Alicia Day was sentenced to 13 days of “administrative arrest” and fined 20,000 roubles ($285) for obstructing pedestrians during an unapproved protest.
According to TASS, she stated:
“I bought the calf so that it wouldn’t be eaten.”
Day explained in the video that she had arranged for a driver to drive the calf to Red Square. She stated:
“I wanted to show it a beautiful location in our beautiful country.”
When asked about the situation, the embassy of the United States did not immediately respond.
According to the RIA news agency, Day had previously carried out similar acts of protest in other countries and had been living in a suburb of Moscow while on a tourist visa.
In 2019, the Daily Mail reported that she had “rescued” a pig she called Jixy Pixy from slaughter in western England, brought it to London in a taxi, and taken it for walks and restaurant meals. However, her landlord discovered she was keeping the pig in a small apartment, so she had to give it to an animal welfare charity.
