Budrigannews.com – After the US Federal Trade Commission declined to challenge the $3.49 billion acquisition, Amazon.com Inc. claims to have completed its acquisition of 1Life Healthcare Inc., the parent company of One Medical.
The biggest move Amazon has ever made into the health care industry is that the deal gives it a network of primary care doctors. In 26 US markets, One Medical operates more than 200 medical offices. Access to its physicians and digital health services requires a subscription fee.
Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that the FTC had decided not to challenge the deal, despite years of investigating Amazon’s market power. Instead, the agency is sending Amazon and One Medical a letter to let them know that the FTC investigation is still ongoing. That allowed Amazon to complete the acquisition.
In a statement, Amazon Health Services chief Neil Lindsay said, “One Medical has set the bar for what a quality, convenient, and affordable primary care experience should be like.” We are excited to assist them in continuing to expand and serve more patients because of their human-centered, technology-forward approach.
Amazon Clinic is a referral service that connects patients with partner physicians for text-chat consultations for the treatment of common, relatively mild conditions like acne and hair loss. Amazon Pharmacy was developed from the assets of the pharmacy startup PillPack, which Amazon acquired in 2018.
One Medical’s chief executive officer, Amir Dan Rubin, will continue to report to Lindsay. In a statement, the company said that it would offer discounted One Medical memberships for a limited time. The package would cost new customers $144 for the first year, down from $199.
