Budrigannews.com – On Tuesday, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Solomon Islands’ southwest coast, prompting authorities to advise residents to seek higher ground.
The quake struck at a depth of 15 kilometers (9 miles), approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of Malango, according to the United States Geological Survey, which had initially estimated its magnitude to be 7.3.
“People are advised to move to higher ground now,” Reuters was informed by George Herming, a spokesperson for Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare.
PCs and office tables were dissipated everywhere. He added, “It was very scary,” noting that the central buildings of Honiara, the capital of the Pacific nation, had not sustained significant damage.
