Accused to stand trial in college murders
Budrigannews.com – On Tuesday, the doctoral student accused of stabbing four University of Idaho students to death in November is scheduled to appear in a Pennsylvania court, where it is anticipated that he will not fight his extradition to Idaho to face murder charges.
Since he was taken into custody on Thursday in Monroe County in eastern Pennsylvania, Bryan Kohberger, 28, has been in jail. Kohberger has been pursuing a PhD in criminal justice at Washington State University, which is close to the campus of the University of Idaho.
According to Jason LaBar, Kohberger’s Monroe County public defender, Kohberger will waive extradition to Idaho to face four counts of first-degree murder and felony burglary.
The four victims, three women and a man, were discovered dead in the women’s house on Nov. 13 and shocked the small college town of Moscow in northwestern Idaho.
Ethan Chapin, 20, of Conway, Washington, was one of the victims; 20-year-old Xana Kernodle of Avondale, Arizona; Madison Mogen, 21, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, of Rathdrum, Idaho, who were all stabbed multiple times, authorities claim. Kernodle’s boyfriend was Chapin.
In the house at the time of the murders, two other female roommates were unharmed and appeared to have slept through the attack.
The night before, Kernodle and Chapin had gone to a party, and best friends Mogen and Goncalves had gone to a local bar and food truck. All four of them returned to the house before 2 a.m., and authorities have stated that the killings took place between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. They have not publicly disclosed a motive, but they are confident that Kohberger is to blame for all four of the deaths. Prosecutors have stated that a probable cause affidavit outlining the basis for the charges will provide additional details; however, it will remain sealed until Kohberger is physically present in Idaho.
Kohberger has been studying in Pullman, Washington, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the University of Idaho campus. According to media reports, Kohberger was in Pennsylvania visiting family at the time of his arrest.
