Abortions in Nigeria-UN demands investigation
Budrigannews.com – According to U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric on Friday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an investigation into claims that the Nigerian army carried out systemic and coerced abortions.
On Wednesday, Reuters reported that the Nigerian Army has been operating a covert, systematic, and illegal abortion program in the northeast of the country since at least 2013.
The military, according to Nigeria’s defense chief, will not investigate the report because it is false.
In an email to Reuters, U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated, “The Secretary-General takes note with concern of the allegations of systemic and coerced abortions reportedly perpetrated by the Nigerian Army against women and girls who had already been victimized by Boko Haram.”
“The allegations merit a thorough investigation, and if necessary, the immediate implementation of corrective measures and accountability measures.”
