Abortion rights under threat in the U. S.

Budrigannews.com – In a speech she gave on Sunday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that established a right to abortion until it was overturned last year, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris said that abortion rights are being attacked all over the United States.

According to Harris, “The right of every woman in every state in the country to make decisions about her own body is on the line.” Now, Republicans in Congress are calling for a nationwide ban on abortions at conception. They dare not!”

According to White House officials, more than 26 million women currently live in states that prohibit abortion, and sixty anti-abortion bills have been filed for the 2023 legislative session.

Harris stated, “The majority of Americans oppose these attacks,” adding that voters in states like Kansas, California, Michigan, Montana, Kentucky, and Vermont affirmed abortion rights in proposals for ballots.

Harris also argued in favor of federal legislation to safeguard reproductive rights in Tallahassee, Florida. When Democrats controlled both chambers of Congress the previous year, they were unable to pass. Republicans, who currently hold a narrow majority in the House of Representatives, are unlikely to support the proposal.

After some state officials attempted to prevent women from legally accessing medication abortion, Biden issued a proclamation on Sunday to protect access to medication abortion.

This month, the Food and Drug Administration announced that abortion pills would become more widely available through mail order and pharmacies. A legal battle is underway at a federal court in Texas, where pro-lifers have filed a lawsuit to overturn the drugs’ approval.

According to White House officials, Harris’ decision to speak in Florida was influenced by the state’s decision last year to pass an abortion ban without any exceptions for rape or incest.

Ron DeSantis, the Republican governor of the state, has the potential to run for president in 2024.

Republicans’ weaker-than-expected performance in the midterm elections last year is attributed, by Democrats and some Republicans, to concerns about the loss of abortion rights. In the 2024 elections, which will determine who will control the White House and both chambers of Congress, Biden’s party sees abortion as an issue that can benefit it.
