A court in the US may revoke permits for abortion drugs
Budrigannews.com – The anti-abortion group filed a lawsuit on Friday asking the court to overturn U.S. regulators’ approval of the drug Mifepristone’s drug abortion.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in 2000 that it was not authorized to approve drugs for abortion and could not properly study the risks of minors.
The FDA “chose politics over science and failed American women and girls when it approved chemical abortion drugs for use in the United States,” the lawsuit said.
The FDA did not immediately respond to a request for comment. President Joe Biden’s administration moved earlier this year to expand access to drug abortions after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling and guaranteed nationwide abortion rights.
Mifepristone is an FDA approved prescription drug to cause abortion up to 10 weeks into pregnancy. It should be followed by a second drug, misoprostol. Both drugs also have other uses.
The plaintiffs in Friday’s lawsuit claim that the FDA improperly approved a plan to allow patients quick access to better treatments for the disease, even though pregnancy is not a disease.
The Supreme Court’s 6-month ruling has put the spotlight on drug abortions, which account for more than half of abortions in the United States. The Dutch supplier of abortion drugs in the mail saw a surge in demand in the wake of a decision that allowed more than 20 states to begin enforcing new restrictions on abortion.
