Will the Taliban lift the ban on women’s work

Budrigannews.com – After the Taliban outlawed female NGO workers in Afghanistan, the head of a major aid organization announced on Thursday that he would write to senior administration figures in Kandahar to request a change in policy.

Reuters was informed by Jan Egeland, the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Secretary General, that it was essential to interact with the leadership in the southern city, which is home to Haibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban’s supreme leader.

“The following will be included in the letter I’m writing: We know you because we worked for many years in… Taliban-controlled areas. You know us.

“Our female employees have always worn the hijab, as you know. On long trips, they’ve had a male chaperone. Your restriction on female employees is hurting your people.

The Taliban government issued a directive last month requiring all aid organizations, both domestic and international, to stop employing women until further notice.

It claimed that some women had not adhered to the Taliban’s interpretation of the Islamic dress code, which led to the global condemnation of the move.

As a result, numerous non-governmental organizations (NGOs) shut down, claiming that they needed female staffers to reach women in the conservative nation.

This week, Egeland went to Kabul, the capital, where officials told him they were in favor of women working for NGOs, but that the order came from Kandahar. A request for clarification was sent to the Taliban administration’s spokespersons, but they did not immediately respond.

Egeland claimed that because it was impossible for foreign humanitarian organizations to meet directly with Akhundzada, he had arranged meetings in Kandahar with the provincial governor and the Ulema Council, which consists of religious scholars.

He said, however, that he would write and try to set up online meetings instead after bad weather delayed flights.

He said he was happy to see some signs of flexibility in health care and other areas where male and female employees worked together. However, he demanded that the ban be lifted completely.

He stated, “Our male staff cannot go to widows, single mothers, and their children, as well as all of the vulnerable female groups here, and were prevented from doing all work.”
