Peru may close airports due to strike

Budrigannews.com – During the violent protests that erupted once more on Friday and resulted in the arrest and ousting of former President Pedro Castillo, protesters in Peru blocked important roads and forced the closure of five airports. As a result, at least 16 people were killed in the demonstrations.

Local authorities say that clashes between security forces and protesters killed eight people on Thursday in Ayacucho. This happened after a Supreme Court panel ordered Castillo to be held in pretrial detention for 18 months while he is investigated on charges of “rebellion and conspiracy.”

A constituent assembly, early elections, and the resignation of new President Dina Boluarte, who succeeded Castillo after he was ousted from office by a vote in Congress just hours after attempting to dissolve Congress, are among the demands made by demonstrators.

Castillo has denied bad behavior and says he stays the country’s legitimate president.

In an interview with RPP, a local radio station, Eliana Revollar, the head of Peru’s ombudsman’s office, stated that the protest deaths could reach 20.

According to Revollar, protesters in Ayacucho set fire to the offices of the local judiciary and prosecutor, and security forces used weapons to stop attacks on the airport and other locations.

The ombudsman’s office said in a statement that a criminal complaint has been filed with prosecutors who specialize in human rights in the Ayacucho province of Huamanga to determine “responsibility for the serious violations” there. The statement did not provide any additional information.

The government of Boluarte declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, limiting freedoms like the right to assembly and granting police special powers, but it does not appear to have stopped the protests.
