Peru may postpone elections to 2024
Budrigannews.com – In the wake of the assassination of former leader Pedro Castillo, Peru’s new president Dina Boluarte announced early on Monday that she would present a bill to Congress to move general elections forward two years to April 2024. This announcement came amid rising tensions in the Andean nation.
After Castillo was fired by Congress and arrested for attempting to dissolve the legislature to prevent an impeachment vote against him, Boluarte was sworn in last week.
In a speech to the nation, Boluarte stated, “I have decided to present a bill to reach an agreement with Congress to bring forward the general elections to April 2024.”

Following the deaths of two teenagers and injuries to four others on Sunday in Peru as a result of protests calling for the country to hold general elections following Castillo’s ouster, Boluarte has stated that she will present the bill in the “coming days.”
Instead of allowing Boluarte to remain in power until 2026, when Castillo’s term would have ended, demonstrators, many of whom were Castillo supporters, have been calling for elections for days. Additionally, some protesters call for the demise of Congress.
