Budrigannews.com – According to reports from Russian news agencies, opposition politician Ilya Yashin was found guilty on Friday of spreading “fake information” about the army.
Investigators were looking for a nine-year sentence for Yashin, a Moscow region councilor. Later that day, the sentence was due.
Yashin was tried for a video that he posted to YouTube in April. In it, he talked about evidence that was found by Western journalists about Russian war crimes in Bucha, near Kyiv. He also questioned the official version from Moscow that said the reports were made up as a “provocation” against Russia.
After invading Ukraine on February 24, Russia enacted new legislation that allows for up to 15 years in prison for spreading false information about the military.
Yashin addressed President Vladimir Putin directly in his final court statement this week, describing him as “the person responsible for this slaughter” and requesting that he “stop this madness.”
