Budrigannews.com – At a birthday party in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, gunmen killed eight people and wounded three others, according to police. A manhunt was underway to find the killers, they added.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) released a statement stating that two individuals were responsible for the Sunday mass shooting that took place at a house in Kwazakele, Gqeberha, between 5:15 and 5:30 p.m. (1515 and 1530 GMT).
According to the police, no arrests have been made and the perpetrators of the attack have fled. The attack’s circumstances and possible causes were still under investigation. The victims have not been identified by police, but they have confirmed that the house’s owner was one of them.
Eastern Cape SAPS Commissioner Nomthetheleli Lillian Mene stated:
“These victims were killed by criminals, and we will not rest until we find out what happened and who was responsible for (this) callous and cold-blooded attack on these unsuspecting victims.”
The nation was shocked by a string of mass shootings last year, which led to the most recent incident. 19 people were killed in a series of random shootings in July that occurred within hours of each other.
With a population of 60 million, South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with approximately 20,000 deaths annually.
There are approximately 3 million registered firearms in South Africa, according to the Gun Free South Africa campaign group, with many more unregistered.
On Monday, the location of the most recent outrage lager is expected to be visited by Police Minister Bheki Cele and SAPS National Commissioner Fannie Masemola.
