Budrigannews.com – On Friday, the University of Michigan announced that it had reached a $490 million settlement with more than 1,000 individuals who had alleged that a former sports doctor had sexually assaulted them.
From 1966 until his retirement in 2003, the doctor, Robert Anderson, worked as a physician for the university’s football team and other athletic programs. 2008 saw his passing. The majority of victims were male.
According to the university, 98% of claimants approved of the deal. It also said that the claimants and their lawyers decided how to divide the money.
“The University of Michigan sincerely apologizes for the abuse that the late Robert Anderson committed. In a statement, Paul Brown, chairman of the university’s governing board, said, “We hope this settlement helps the survivors heal.”
The university stated in January that the agreement, which was the result of years of negotiations with victims’ attorneys, would resolve all allegations of abuse by Anderson.
At the time, it said that 1,050 claimants will get $460 million, and $30 million will be set aside for any unidentified victims who come forward by July 31, 2023.
